Reviewed October 2009
What is the official name of the RPL35A gene? The official name of this gene is “ribosomal protein L35a.” RPL35A is the gene's official symbol. The RPL35A gene is also known by other names, listed below. What is the normal function of the RPL35A gene? The RPL35A gene provides instructions for making a protein called ribosomal protein L35A. Ribosomal proteins are components of cellular structures called ribosomes, which process the cell's genetic instructions to create proteins. Because it is difficult to determine the specific functions of individual proteins within ribosomes, the specific function of ribosomal protein L35A is unclear. There are more than 75 different ribosomal proteins, some of which are involved in the assembly or stability of ribosomes. Others help carry out the ribosome's main function of building new proteins. Studies suggest that some ribosomal proteins may have other functions, such as participating in chemical signaling pathways within the cell, regulating cell division, and controlling the self-destruction of cells (apoptosis). How are changes in the RPL35A gene related to health conditions?
Where is the RPL35A gene located?Cytogenetic Location: 3q29-qter Molecular Location on chromosome 3: base pairs 197,677,051 to 197,682,721 The RPL35A gene is located on the long (q) arm of chromosome 3 between position 29 and the end (terminus) of the arm. More precisely, the RPL35A gene is located from base pair 197,677,051 to base pair 197,682,721 on chromosome 3. See How do geneticists indicate the location of a gene? in the Handbook.
